- 9/11
- Columbine
- Kobe Bryant’s death
- The first time Tupac got shot and his death later on, of course.
- Aaliyah dying
I remember a lot of moments if someone brings them up. But these were memorable. I will never forget hearing about Kobe Bryant. I was shocked. SHOCKED. What do you mean he’s dead??? I was running errands and had no idea. I think I had cable news on and I came into the room, and I started screaming, “What? Kobe Bryant’s dead (or been killed)?” It was so shocking.
I had no idea 9/11 happened until 3 or 4 hours later. No one told me. I was doing temp work with a few people and didn’t find out until I got on a computer around noon. Later, I remember them talking about something, but they didn’t seem alarmed, so I had no reason to think it was a big deal at all.
Columbine and Aaliyah’s death broke me for different reasons. I will never forget Columbine. I stared at the victims faces for so long, asking why? how? etc.
Aaliyah’s death was surreal. No one near me was a fan. I bet they didn’t even know who she was, and they are walking around like nothing happened. It was so strange.
I’m probably leaving out a lot. I’ve been watching (or listening to) court trials a lot, that made me think of trials – the OJ verdict, but the Trayvon Martin verdict was surprising because it wasn’t as if the jury only had one option to find him guilty. I think manslaughter or whatever they have in Florida was an option. (Ugh – can’t remember the alleged ?? murderer’s name and I’m good with that.) I wasn’t shocked at all by the OJ verdict. It didn’t deeply affect me.
Now I’m thinking about when AJ McLean from Backstreet Boys went to rehab. It’s time to go now. I was shocked and watching the announcement live. Those days. Simpler times.
